What’s ancient, scaly and has a long, rounded snout with upward-facing nostrils? It’s the star of the Alley-Gator Hunt in Downtown Hattiesburg, a new scavenger hunt experience in The Hub City.
About the Alley-Gator “Hunt”
In fact, the Alley-Gator Hunt in Downtown Hattiesburg is here to stay! The permanent attraction kicked off the gator hunting on Saturday, Oct. 21st, in celebration of National Reptile Awareness Day at The Hattiesburg Pocket Museum. More specifically, “A Very Special Alley-Gator Hunt” takes participants on a journey of discovery throughout downtown.
Keep your eyes peeled for 10 teeny-tiny alley-gator statues, featuring Mississippi’s Alley-Gator family. The family is full of fascinating and unusual characters, who happen to be alligators. What’s more, these unique alligators live in the captivating world of Downtown Hattiesburg’s alleys, sidewalks and even storefronts.

More about the Alley-Gators
Based on characters created by longtime Hattiesburg residents, Dr. Richard Andrew (Ricky) Conn and Lisa Ann Slay Conn, the main alligator and host of the hunt is named Alexander after Alexander the Great. Alexander Alley-Gator, or Alex for short, calls Hattiesburg’s alleys home.
In Hattiesburg, the alleys are thriving and vibrant spaces for community life, showcasing art, music, movies, dining, shopping, festivals and much more. However, in an accompanying book titled See You Later Alley-Gator, Alex sets out to travel far from home.
But before he goes, he visits his family, which includes his parents, brother and baby sister, along with a cousin, aunts and uncles. Hence, the fun cast of characters you will be hunting for. And don’t forget to look for a copy of the book in downtown storefronts as you go!
